Description

The DST GPS measures temperature and pressure (depth) and listens to acoustic signals from special sonar transmitters. Pressure sensor is optional in the DST GPS. Recorded data is stored in the logger‘s internal memory with a real time reference for each measurement. The DST GPS is equipped with unique user specified features for optimizing the recorders +performance when receiving GPS position.

The DST GPS is supported by the SeaStar software and the Communication Box which serves as an interface between the logger and a PC. Communication between the logger and the Communication Box is wireless.

In SeaStar, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder. Up to seven different intervals can be set for the same measurement sequence. This is especially useful when more frequent measurements are needed at a certain time period.

With default programming pressure, temperature and sonar signals are recorded at the same time. Optionally, the three parameters can be set as primary, secondary and tertiary parameters with different sampling frequency. That way memory partitioning can be customized according to individual preferences.

After recovering the DST the recorded data is uploaded to SeaStar where results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form. After retrieving the data, the DST can be re-programmed and reused as long as the battery lasts.
A set of Communication Box and SeaStar software needs to be purchased with the first order.

When applied on living subjects, the DST GPS can be attached both externally and internally given its biocompatible character. If applied internally, Star-Oddi can deliver the tag with a plastic tube attached for external identification.  For external tagging, Star-Oddi can provide a tag holder kit.

How the Positioning System works

The DST GPS is a signal receiving device that can receive sonar waves in water. In order for the logger to recognize the signals they need to come from a sonar with a certain frequency. Star-Oddi offers a portable Fish Positioning Sounder (FPS) for this purpose. FPS sounder can be handheld or attached to a vessel. The Star-Oddi FPS offers a signal range of 600m. Otherwise certain types of Simrad sounders (Simrad SP60, SP70, SP90) can be set to communicate with DST GPS loggers. Simrad sonars for fishing vessels have a greater signal radius of 4 km.

The sounder works as a GPS receiver getting the GPS position of the sounder from a satellite and sending it via an acoustic transmitter as a sonar signal underwater. If a tagged animal passes the area within the sonar range and the DST GPS is receiving (according to set interval) it records the geographical position of the sonar in its internal memory. Recorded position along with temperature and pressure values can be retrieved after the logger has been recaptured and the data analyzed in the SeaStar software.
