Eruption in Iceland!
After weeks of earthquakes on the Southwestern corner of the country, Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes peninsula started erupting on March 19th. By the end of April, nine craters had opend but only seven are active.
It all started with a large earthquake on February 24th that had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale. This large event was followed by thousands of smaller earthquakes and while no serious damage has been caused inhabitants were growing tired of the nearly constant shaking.
Finally, on March 19th the activity resulted in an eruption. The eruption is far enough from towns that it will not cause harm to humans but close enough to roads that many Icelander's have hiked to the eruption site to take a look!
For those of you not in Iceland you can watch the eruption live here.
