Small, Implantable Heart Rate and Temperature Data Logger for Avian Studies

Small, minimally invasive and easy to implant. Long- and short- term heart rate and body temperature measurements in wild birds and poultry.

Ideal for studies in wild birds and poultry to measure baseline, stress and immunology response, energy expenditure, welfare and diurnal rhythm.

Key features

  • Designed for and tested in poultry
  • Small size – only 3.3g
  • Long battery life – typically over 3 months
  • ECG derived heart rate, including data verification
  • Automatic stress-free measurements
  • Description

    Minimally invasive

The DST micro-HRT Avian, simultaneously measures long term heart rate and temperature in the study animal. The logger has one electrode on the housing and one as a short external wire, which makes it especially simple to implant. It is made of unique ceramic housing and epoxy and is hermetically sealed, guaranteeing biocompatibility. The electrode wire is made of medical grade stainless steel.

    Application

The logger is ideal for a variety of studies including those looking at behaviour, welfare, energy expenditure, diurnal rhythm, and stress response in studies of wild birds or poultry research.

    ECG derived heart rate

The heart rate is derived from a single channel ECG. As the electrode pair consists of one short wire that is possible to locate close to the heart and one on the housing itself, the logger is especially easy to implant. It can be implanted either subcutaneously or intraperitoneally. The logger takes ECG measurements at the set time interval and calculates the mean heart rate for each recording. For validation purposes, individual raw ECG measurements can be saved. In addition, each measurement is graded with a QI (quality index).

    Stress-free long-term studies for over 3 months

The logger is especially useful when a comprehensive data set throughout the research is needed with no disturbance to the animal. The heart rate logger has a battery life of over 3 months, with sampling interval of 10 minutes.

14 mm wire one of two electrodes for maximal heart rate pickup

To increase the quality of the ECG measurements the extruding wire picks up the elusive ECG signal in birds and makes it possible to calculate heart rate and store raw ECG data.

    Single or multiple intervals

There are two modes for sampling, either at a single interval throughout the period or multiple intervals. Multiple intervals are especially useful when frequent measurements are needed at certain time periods.
